    I think what matters more than words is the context of them. I've called black people niggers and laughed with them, but in another situation or with different people they would take offense. You just have to be able to read your audience.

    Like Runa said though, it's flawed logic - or at least incomplete logic - to say that using words a lot lessens their offensiveness, but using them in positive or neutral context instead of negative context can for sure, just like using them negatively can increase their offensiveness.

    Like tuk-tuk said, gay used to mean happy. It certainly doesn't mean that anymore (we can have another discussion about the dynamism of language if you want) which shows that the negative use was not only able to change its level of offensiveness but also the entire meaning of the word.
