Neverwinter
  • After seeing Neverwinter's high rating on mmorpg.com and Lizette's screenies I gave this game a try and I have to say I'm really impressed so far. I'll give some thoughts on it.

    1) Graphics are awesome, on par with or exceeding Scarlet Blade (and therefore better than Rappelz, Aion, AoC or Vanguard), provided you disable bloom of course. Fuckin' bloom...

    2) It seems to be a hardcore MMO in the same way that Vanguard is, meaning you are unlikely to ever run out of content.

    3) Lots of little new or uncommon things for MMOs. Like my character's weapon is an orb that floats above his body and flies into his hand for attacks. I have a sweet attack that freezes the enemy and the animation actually shows the enemy being frozen from the feet up, its movement speed reducing as it freezes.
Another thing I liked is that it sets you up with skills on both the mouse buttons and the keys surrounding WASD. For example my freeze skill is bound to my right mouse button, while my AoE that causes ice pillars to shoot out from the ground all around me is bound to Q. This is often what FPS players do to minimize the movement of the hand and therefore quicken reflexive actions.
It also brings back a feature of old games like Age of Empires and Warcraft that I miss, which is it lightens the map when you have physically seen the area. It makes it easy to re-trace your steps and it's another example of a cool little feature that seeks to set the game apart.

So anyway I'm still new to the game so I'll reserve judgement for now but it is promising.

  • 4) The quests are fully voiced, which is something I really like about AoC

    5) You can rotate and zoom in on your character in the character window (where you equip stuff), nice little touch

  • 6) You can have the NPC voice keep reading the quest dialogue after you walk away, meaning you can grab the quest from them and start moving to the quest location while you hear what they have to say. So much less waiting time

  • 7) You can pick up coins by just walking over them, making looting much faster. After all, when are you gonna choose to not pick up coins?

    :@) "No, after you!"

:(|) "I insist, you take the coin good sir"

:@) "No, I insist, you should have it"

  • My character has a teleport skill so I could just teleport past the coins ;)

  • 9 skillbar slots (am I counting them right?) would feel very strange coming from these other 15,000-skill MMOs oO

  • I assume you can add more if you need to. I've looked at the skill trees and there are heaps of skills

  • You have to pick and choose, like what they did for Diablo III

  • 8) You can push a key to toggle a visible path to your quest objective, useful if you get lost. I thought Sar might like that feature since that's how she uses the auto-locate feature in Scarlet Blade :)

  • Here's a screenshot of #8. The glowing lights on the floor show the way to the quest objective

  • We should get a Neverwinter category started, I have every intention of continuing to play this game.
It's so Vanguard-like, but with better graphics.
At first I didn't really like that you couldn't use the scroll wheel on the mouse to zoom further out from your character, but now I'm really glad because as a result it makes the game way more immersive. :D
