BREAKING NEWS: A second explosion has occurred in the Pike River coal mine where 29 miners are trapped on the West Coast.

Distraught family members left a scheduled briefing a short time ago, only about 10 minutes after it had started and many in tears.

Lawrie Drew, the father of trapped miner Zen Drew, said officials had told the families that there had been a second explosion.

Investigation head Superintendent Gary Knowles said the large explosion happened about 2.37pm and they were not expecting anyone to get out alive.

They were now going into recovery mode. It was one of the most horrific things he has had to deal with as a policeman.

"We had to break the news to the family and they are extremely distraught.

"I was at the mine myself when the explosion occurred. The blast was horrific. Just as severe as the first blast - and we are now moving into a recovery mode."

    Wow... forums are dead.
But back on topic... yea that would be pretty scary. Speaking of things breaking, did anybody go and have a look at the building they tore down in Auckland night before last? Opposite the skytower?
I had a look-see. You can still see HUGE cracks in the foundations, so I can see why they took it down so quickly. Made for a hell of a lot of traffic when trying to get out of Auckland because they turned the traffic lights off at the surrounding intersections.. and of course my bus has to go through those lights >.<

"Gas levels thwart mine rescue attempt"

"Police are still refusing to give the go-ahead for rescuers to enter the Pike River mine where 29 men are missing after an explosion.

Officials say they are not prepared to put volunteers at risk while poisonous gas levels remain uncertain."

"LATEST: A range of hi-tech gadgets have given fresh hope to the families of 29 men trapped down the Pike River coal mine.

A specially-adapted NZ Defence Force robot will be sent into the mine, which is full of toxic fumes, to see if there are any signs of the men, who have been entombed since Friday.

A camera will be attached to the robot, which will also detect levels of dangerous methane and carbon dioxide gases which have flooded the colliery. The fumes are preventing rescue teams from entering.

It will be sent 2km deep into the horizontally-dug mine to where the men are believed to be. They haven't been heard from since a large explosion shortly before 4pm on Friday.

The drilling of a 162m-deep bore hole will also continue today. Once specialists reach the seam, at around 150m, they will switch to a diamond-tipped drill bit to prevent igniting sparks, which could set off another devastating explosion. "
